Shelter City is a national initiative of Justice & Peace that is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Shelter Cities offer temporary shelter, training and safety to international human rights defenders such as journalists, community leaders, lawyers, artists and scientists who combat human rights violations in their home country. Tilburg has been a Shelter City since 2016. Every spring, Shelter City Tilburg welcomes a human rights defender (HRD) for three months. During their stay in the Netherlands, the HRDs continue their work in safety and can catch their breath here. They can also develop and expand their network of social organizations and political contacts. But it is also important that there is time for relaxation. Getting to know the city of Tilburg, doing fun things such as visiting a museum, walking through the city or just having a chat or eating together. What does a volunteer do at Shelter City? Several volunteers are active in Tilburg who work together to ensure that the HRD feels at home. We receive the HRD during a joint introductory meeting and from there individual agreements are made with the HRD. As a volunteer, you make individual arrangements with the MRV to do something fun.
